When the exam question says the target should pass ahead with a CPA of 2 miles, that does not mean it should pass 2 miles dead ahead.
As you can see in this example, when the danger target is dead ahead, it is over 3 miles away. If the target holds a steady course and speed as it passes, the closest it will get to our own ship is 2 miles away to port.
The NRML has been transferred to M so swing the R on your own ship's vector to determine the new course to steer.
